We have now completed our shapes unit. But, we won't get to bent out of shape over it, we will revisit these shapes often! :) I love the book Mouse Shapes by Ellen Stoll Walsh, which is what this shaped mouse below is adapted from. It is a cute book about 3 mice trying to hide from a cat, so they make big mice out of different shapes to scare him off.
We had a letter review this week. We have now learned letters A-G! Here are some individual puzzles adapted to each letter. We had each of the letters we have learned out to build, and your smart kids even put them in order too!
For a writing center, we traced shapes! We had different story cards that had us complete the picture, add, and trace.
With our wiki sticks (wax covered string), we outlined our shapes. It is amazing how well they stayed right on the lines!
We used our counting blocks to make patterns. These blocks are different from most in that they each have shapes in the center of each block. So, they used my pattern strips to follow and create that pattern. What great fine motor skills to snap and unsnap these too, it was actually a lot harder than it looks!
We made some lacing mats to take home and practice our lacing skills.
We practiced writing our letters of the alphabet (up to G) with our dry erase crayons and upper and lowercase letters. I refer to the lines and curves in each letter as a big straight line, small straight line, big curvy line, and small curvy line. This helps them learn the formation of each letter in a uniform way. Ex: The uppercase B is one long straight line, and two short curvy lines.
We practiced our shape, color, and sorting skills at our button jar shape center. We successfully filled each of the jars to the tip top with the corresponding shape on its lid.
And, we played ourselves a few games of tic-tac-shapes this week. Will the squares, or circles win??
For dramatic play, we built fun creations with our big foam shapes.
Your children are adjusting to sharing, transitioning, listening, and rotations so great! We are having a great time!
