It's "time" for spirit week!

We've got spirit, yes we do! We've got spirit, how 'bout you?! There is nothing better than staying in your PJ's all day,right? That's what we did this week. Along with wearing our silly hats and silly socks. I just love all of these faces!

We talked about clocks and time this week. We discussed the basics of the hour and minute hands. We talked about how their are 24 hours in a day so the hour hands goes around the clock twice each day. We only practiced time on the hour, so our minute hand was always on the 12.  Here the kids were instructed to set their clocks to 9 o'clock.

This giant clock helped us see that the 12 is at the top of the clock, and numbers 1-12 go all the way around the clock. We took turns throwing our bean bags in each hole starting at number one, and ending at number 12. 

These clocks had a hula hoop for a circle, the numbers 1-12, and 2 clock hands. We raced to see who could put their clock together in the correct order first. 

We continued our clock practice at this center. We turned over a card with a time on it (always ending on the hour still), and moved our clock hands to that time.

Trying to teach kids the concept of time can be quite difficult. At this center, we timed ourselves for one minute. We discussed how one minute is 60 seconds, and we had a sand timer to try to build some different puzzles within that minute. We also counted for each other to work on our counting skills. 

These cute caterpillar counting books are great at home practice to help us count to 20. They not only show the number, but the word number, and you can also count the caterpillar if they still don't know the number by sight quite yet. 

During spirit week, I often times like to get out my magnets. In fact, this day was all about magnets! Every center was something with magnets! This counting center below had our counting chips and magnetic wands to help us with our numbers. 

This table had many magnets for the kids to explore. they were told to try to get all of the magnets out of the water-filled vases, without touhing the water! They also had different manipulatives to show how magnets attract and repel and how you can move things too. 

These magnetic alphabet letters were just thrown on the board in random order. The kids had fun putting them back in their alphabetical order.

Suessical celebration

These kids in the hat know a lot about that! We celebrated in style this week, Suess style! Dr. Suess had a birthday on March 2nd, so our week was filled with reading, counting, and trying to rhyme.......all of the time!

These hats were a perfect way to practice saying and spelling our -at rhyming words.

We couldn't celebrate a birthday without a little cake and ice cream! So, we practiced our counting and patterning skills while we were at it.

 

We read and discussed a bunch of Dr. Suess books this week. A great counting practice book of his is "Ten Apples Up on Top". We then made this craft with the tiger from the story with 5 apples up on top of his head. This is the number he first has when he is introduced in the book. 

We went on an alphabet hunt too! This worksheet had every uppercase letter of the alphabet hidden in the picture. They did a great job identifying each letter, and crossing it off the list of letters on the bottom of the page. 

We also just had to have a books center this week! Filled with many of Dr. Suess' classic books, of course!

I themed all of my centers off of one of his books, so this math center contained a monkey balancing scale where he held the same amount of bananas on each arm, and barrel of monkeys to practice our counting. This center went along with the book "Hand, hand, fingers, thumb" by Al Perkins. Not all books were written by Suess, but everyone has his stamp of approval on it, as they are part of his Beginner book series. 

You can never have too much letter review! This center was a slam dunk! There was a ball with each letter of the alphabet in both uppercase and lowercase, and the kids tossed the balls into the corresponding hoop. 

And, one of my favorites about Dr. Suess week......oobleck. This green infamous goo is so neat because it is both a solid and a liquid. The kids can form it into their hands to make different shapes, and then it quickly melts back into a liquid as they stop forming it and watch it transform. You can easily make this at home using:

2 cups cornstarch

1 cup water

food coloring

Loads of fun!!!

Dr. Suess wasn't the only birthday we celebrated this week! We also had fun with this beautiful and sweet 5 year old!
