Meet our pet frogs! We couldn't possibly talk about pets this month, without getting one of our own! The kids have each named them something to their liking, so I will let you do the same...and name them yourself! :) Some names that I heard were Freddy the Frog, Tom and Jerry, and Hopper.
We talked about some of the huge responsibilities of taking care of pets. We discussed what types of pets we have, and what they eat and need to live.
We each get to take a turn every time we come to school to feed them. They live on top of our book shelf.
For a math center, we helped these little dogs find their spots! The blue boxes above the dogs had a number on them, and we added that many spots to our dog. These dogs were printed from one of my favorite sites prekinders.com
We also used our fine motor skills, and fed our pets with our tweezers. We rolled a die, and fed our rabbit that number of carrots, or our dog that many bones.
We played a math game called 'Add a bone'. This game has two pop-up die inside of a plastic dome (similar to the game Trouble) and we popped each die, added that many bones to our dirt, and added the bones up to get our answer. Great game for addition skills!
and, we also did some math problems with our frogs and counting trays too!
We talked about pet doctors this week....veterinarians. We each brought in one of our stuffed pets to school and we had some tools and supplies to doctor up our pets! We gave them their shots, wrapped up their broken legs, and fixed their "boo-boos" with band-aids.
And, we used paper rolls, peanut butter, and bird seed to make some bird feeders. A great start to Spring, and also a great way to watch and hear the birds eating and singing. We can all have our very own "pets" now without having all of the responsibilities of taking care of them. :)

And, although we don't usually catch our own fish that we would keep for a pet, the kids had a good time catching some fish this week and learning some of the names of some different fish.
For a color recognition and a counting activity, we enjoyed a game of Topsy Turtle. The turtle tells us what color of stepping stone to add, and we stack as many as possible without him toppling over.
Aubrey and Peyton are practicing some lacing skills here with our pet lacing cards. Yet another great fine motor activity to build those little muscles! Can't get enough of that at this age!
